If you fancy a trip south of Dublin – especially if you are treating yourself to a four and five-star budget – then the delights of Carton House await. A top-end affairs: Carton House Hotel, which adjoins two courses on the grounds, was the base for Real Madrid when they played a friendly match in Dublin last year.
The links-style Montgomerie course at Carton House is just 20 minutes’ drive south of Dublin and has already played host to two Irish Opens, while the Mark O’Meara course is just as delightful and just 300 yards shorter than its 7,300 yard Montgomerie counterpart. The course is magnificent, it goes without saying, and it is matched by the wonderful facilities on the rolling acreage. The IAGTO awards in 2008 named Carton House the European Golf Resort of the Year, and strolling through the stately house which gives it its name, it is not hard to see why.
