Back in north Dublin we have Donabate, a fun 27-hole parkland course with sand-based greens. Located close to Donabate Beach, the course itself is impressive, with a blue, yellow and red nine; most resplendent with lush fairways and green trees, others with water. The ninth hole on the red nine even features a little stonework bridge which evokes images of Carnoustie in Scotland, scene of Padraig Harrington’s British Open triumph in 2007.
The club is a wonderfully social outing for any visitor, and is a mix of the old and the new. Last year it celebrated its 85th birthday and the celebrations were held in its state-of-the-art clubhouse with all the trimmings. The club is also renowned for putting out special offers, particularly regarding early-bird rates.
