Penha Longa Hotel & Golf Resort

In the lap of the mountains to the south of the town lies the Penha Longa Hotel and Golf Resort, which consists of a luxury five-star hotel, a charming spa, country club and 27-holes of roller-coaster golf. The 18-hole Atlantic course was lovingly created by Trent Jones Jr, who has used the natural ebb and flow of this sensitive landscape to brilliant effect. After a gentle opening duo, the course rises on the approach to the third green and it is from here that the senses awaken through a thrill-ride of elevation changes, lakes, old monastic walls and pure golfing poetry. The final four-hole stretch rivals the best and is designed to make or break your day. The par-three 15th requires a 170-yard carry over water and the ensuing index one, par-four 16th is a belter. Played from a lofty tee to a fairway more than 100m below, flanked by thick forest on either side, accuracy and length are required. A good drive for the average player will still leave a near 200-yard second shot uphill to the elevated green. Onwards and downwards at the par-three 17th, played again from an elevated tee to a small green 190 yards beneath. Having successfully negotiated that trio (a big if!) the final par-five provides plentiful challenges of its own with a final green that is both narrow and closely guarded by several bunkers. Penha Longa is a joy to play and everything here is to be admired.
