Also on the Gulf of Morbihan (‘Little Sea’ in Breton), Ploemeur Océan lives up to its name with some stunning sea views out towards Isle de Croix. It’s relatively new, just over 20 years old, but seems more mature, with water hazards on nearly half the holes. Although relatively short for a championship course, it has a reputation as one of the toughest in southern Brittany.
Beware the large pot bunkers – and sloping fairways mean you’ll need to adjust to balls lying above or below your feet. The target areas are wide, but heather-lined. What really makes this course such an enjoyable challenge, though, is the unavoidable wind – a rolling bump-and-run is often a wiser choice than a high approach.
