If you fancy a trip south of Dublin – especially if you are treating yourself to a four and five-star budget – then the delights of the world famous K Club await. A top-end affairs: The K Club was the location for one of the finest performances by a European Ryder Cup team in recent history back in 2006, on a course designed by Arnold Palmer.
Any course which hosts the Ryder Cup has to be something special, and the course in Straffan in Co Kildare certainly lives up to its billing.
Given the location it was perhaps no surprise that Irish golfers Darren Clarke and Padraig Harrington played such pivotal roles in sweeping Europe to an emotional victory. The Palmer-designed course on which those famous scenes unfolded plays to a par of 72, as does its twin, the Smurfit Course, which has hosted the European Open. Both present a tough challenge, with the Palmer course commanding higher green fees; but then, what price the feeling as you stroll up the majestic par-five 18th, literally following in the footsteps of the heroes of 2006? Exactly.
