Wentworth’s West course is not for the faint-hearted, the high-handicapper or those without deep pockets. But its history speaks for itself. In addition to the 1953 Ryder Cup, it has hosted the Canada Cup – the forerunner to today’s World Cup of Golf; the World Match Play between 1964 and 2007; and the PGA Championship since 1984. The fairways have been trodden by most of the game’s great and good. Some even have homes overlooking those same fairways.

Designed originally by Harry Colt, the stunning, winding heathland course is enveloped by woodland with rhododendrons adding colour. With technology beginning to outstrip Colt’s original masterpiece, it fell to Wentworth resident Ernie Els to modernise the course, and he and his team have done a fine job. The revamp included extensive re-bunkering and lengthening of some holes – but the character and spirit of the course remained. However, his work is not yet complete and the course will remain shut to the public until June, as it undergoes an extensive green rebuilding programme in an effort to make one of the country’s top courses ‘futureproof’.

Despite its difficulty and its expense – a green fee can cost almost £300 – there is a feeling of warmth generated on the first tee. It comes from that feeling of familiarity, as one is so acquainted with the clubhouse and layout from its multitude of TV appearances. But if that familiarity is allowed to breed contempt, you’ll be in trouble. Although the lengthening realistically affects only the pros, the additional bunkers and tightening of some fairways ensure there is no room for wayward hitting.

If you’re feeling flush, it’s a great place to play golf. But remember it’s not available again until June.
