You could wax lyrical about St Anne’s all day, but if you did you would be wasting valuable time which could be spent at some of the other courses in the area, starting with another island-based jewel. In this case, the club is actually called the Island. Well, you would call it that if you knew that up until 1973, this club in Corballis, Donabate, could be accessed only by boat. It is one of the first 12 golf courses founded in Ireland and, thankfully it’s much easier to gain access these days than in years past, when a choppy crossing might have scuppered your chance of a round.

As for the golf, to say the fairways undulate would be to do the word a disservice. There really are some dramatic holes here, and it is challenging from the off with the opening hole, Partridge Hollow. By the time you have putted your last on Boulia Field, you will already have negotiated holes called Valhalla, Prairie and Andes. You will definitely have earned that pint of Guinness afterwards.
