Les Ormes - Epiniac, 35120 - Dol de Bretagne, France
00 33 2 99 73 53 0
18 holes, par 72, 6,307 yards
Our next port of call was Domaine Des Ormes, which is not only a fantastic golf course but a popular self-contained family park. Here, 80 per cent of visitors are made up of British and Irish holidaymakers and it provided our second night’s accommodation in the splendid 49-roomed three-star hotel. It also has an 800-pitch campsite, 36 apartments and two aquatic parks. There are even 18 fully-equipped tree houses, perched high in the mighty oak trees.
The 6,365-yard, par-72 parkland course is set in the grounds of the 16th century castle and its tight, tree-lined fairways demand a little more accuracy off the tee.
The highlight of this circuit is the par-four 11th, with a fairway lined by apple trees and a green guarded by a lake. It’s not until you’ve putted out, however, that you can look back and appreciate the view of the chateau between two lanes of trees.
Both Le Tronchet and Des Ormes are on the road from St Malo to Rennes and are ideally situated to sample the rugged beauty of the Emerald Coast to the west of St Malo, where you will discover a golfing challenge of a very different nature. Links golf is a wonderful variation on the Royal and Ancient game and our final two courses, Dinard and Val Andre, are two magnificent examples.
