For a less demanding introduction to golf Florida-style, Highlands Reserve is laid out in a pleasant environment, is open and forgiving, and presents few, if any, terrors.

First impressions suggest that the sand wedge will be put to great use but don’t be intimidated by the sight of vast stretches of sand. Few of the bunkers actually come into play and many are sited more to protect the properties around the course than to concern the golfer.

Those bunkers that are in the line of fire are less than formidable and the shallow fairway sand traps only present a change of playing surface. As the ball seems to run forever on the short dry grass it is inevitable that it will find one of these hazards sooner or later.

The course is undulating and there are quite a few trees, mainly pines, but given generous fairways, these are not a problem. The real test, as on any course is on the greens, which are quick and not particularly easy to read.

The front nine is pretty straightforward, the back nine slightly less so. And because Highlands Reserve is a popular course with British golfers make sure you book early and adopt a relaxed attitude when you play, then you will certainly have an enjoyable round.
