The Knightsbrook Hotel Spa and Golf Resort is close to the heritage town of Trim in the county of Meath, a little more than 25 miles from the capital. An impressive four-star hotel with more than 100 rooms, a great restaurant and beautiful swimming pool, looks out over the pretty parkland course. Opened in 2006, the 18 holes reflect the character of the man who designed them – Christy O’Connor Junior: delightful, gentle and caring.
Built on former farmland, it makes the best use of the fine specimen trees that adorn it. Fourteen attractive lakes and ponds punctuate the round but Christy is a kind man and they rarely seriously threaten until the fiendish final hole, a testing par three over a lake that provides a modest sting in the tail. But even here there’s a bale-out option. There’s a smattering of gorse but not enough to cause much concern, and neither the shallow bunkers nor the modest rough are truly menacing and the overall impression of the course is that it’s refreshingly user-friendly. The undoubted key to a good score is to putt well. But however well or badly you putt, you’ll certainly enjoy the round.
